When rescue crews arrived in Ventura County, they expected to find empty homes—people had been evacuated hours earlier. But at the end of a winding, smoke-filled road, they spotted something unusual.
Through the billowing smoke, they saw a golden retriever sitting in the driveway of a charred house. His fur was singed and matted with soot, and his eyes were bloodshot from the heat and ash. Yet, he refused to move.
